Windows 8 centralizes its navigation around the Start menu. When pressing the start key, it pulls up the Metro UI like you’ve all seen on any WP7 device. This is a tad confusing to grasp at first, but I got used to it. I almost wish they would have kept the same side start menu, and just combined that with Metro UI.

First I would like to point out some of the features I enjoyed about the new Windows distribution.

It’s fast no doubt

Everything is much cleaner than previous releases

Shortcuts when holding the cursor on the left or right of the screen

Full screen applications (IE, etc..)

Notification integration like mobile platforms

Windows Live integration (XBL, MSN, Music)

The ability to move tiles to desired layout

Xbox Integration (I can control my Xbox from my laptop!)

Many more I haven’t discovered

Overall the feel of the OS took a bit of time to get used to. I felt really uncomfortable using the track pad on my laptop - Mainly because of the side screen shortcuts. Even with the mouse sensitivity at the maximum setting, I had to swipe to the left or right 3 to 4 times on the pad in order to get to the shortcut, it was inconvenient. Which leads me to some of the negatives. Now mind you this isn’t the full release, there are a lot more features yet released such as Zune Pass, Facebook, other application integration.

Track pad is a no no with Windows 8, either hardware limitation or lack of drivers

Application integration (Full screen, notifications, only Micro$oft apps)

Missing features (Zune Pass, is supposed to be supported later)

Navigation shortcuts, search frustrated me, I wanted to press a key on my keyboard rather than go to the side bar. There should have been a universal search button similar to OS X.

Driver support (Had to download track pad drivers, should be better in final release when the OS will search online)

Laptop slow to restart/wake

Overall I was very surprised at how much I liked the look and feel of the OS. I half expected to hate it and go back to Windows 7 shortly afterward.

I can’t wait to see the final release and will be running this preview until that time. I eagerly look forward to the supposed Face <strike>bag</strike> Book support, so I can read and respond to messages without opening my browser and wasting time. I also hope Google works with Microsoft (Big maybe), and integrates some (or all) of its applications into the new OS.

I would reccommend anyone to check out the preview, and use a mouse while you’re at it. ;)

(Windows 8)

Is Microsoft following the trend too much? (Windows 8):
Having been an avid Windows user for the majority of my life, I feel I should comment about the newest iteration of Windows coming later this year. Now setting the scene, the earliest version I used as a child was Windows 98. This was not the greatest of Microsoft’s releases, but it gives me a good base to comment on their latest version.

Ever since Microsoft released Windows Phone 7 I began sliding away from following their products and releases. Why? Partly because I’m an Android OS fanatic. More importantly though, I much prefer the deeper functionality of an OS, more so being able to do exactly what I want with what I own. With platforms such as iOS, Windows Phone you don’t get that.

Which starts my argument that Microsoft is really stepping away from their usual, and “simplifying” everything they make. With their new OS (Windows 8) Microsoft has brought their cell phone OS WP7 into the Desktop and Tablet world, they use what’s called a Metro style. Personally I don’t like this at all, and much prefer my desktop style OS the way it is. Now mind you, you can go to the regular desktop mode with the OS, but it’s no different than Windows 7! What kind of update or new release just throws a nice little Metro cover up on the main OS and is called a “new release”?

I would much prefer Microsoft integrating the tablet OS, and Desktop OS similar to the way Google did with Android OS 4.0 (ICS), desktops run native desktop layout, and tablets run Metro style or a mobile desktop style with swiping capabilities and deep integration for touch screens.

These are just my opinions of course. I think Microsoft should be making revolutionary changes to its OS, not throwing its mobile platform on top of the regular desktop scene, and following the trend by trying to push away from desktops. People seem to forget what brought us to where we are with technology today.

We’ll see how it runs, and flows. I will be downloading the Release candidate and commenting on that myself.

Thanks for reading!
